Screen Icon Bud Tingwell Dies Post by: Funny blogger 15 May, 2009 - 12:22 PM

Legendary actor Charles Tingwell was well known for his countless movie roles but will be best remembered for his endearing personality and great sense of humour.

"Bud" Tingwell left an indelible mark on not only the film industry here in Australia, but seemingly on the Australian psyche in general. A legend of the scene, he appeared in over 16 films, countless TV shows (from Thunderbirds to The Late Show and ahem, Neighbours) as well as numerous stage shows that toured the country and beyond.

So where did the "Bud" come from? "When my mother was pregnant, she had been teased by some friends at the Coogee Surf Club, asking "What's budding in there?" It became "How's the bud?" and finally "Bud".

"I rather liked Charles. But I also love the ordinariness of Bud."

It seems that Bud was born for entertaining. "I loved the magic of what movies could do. I loved film and radio. Dad said, "Look, why don't you apply for this job?" "Cadet announcer / panel operator wanted for leading Sydney commercial radio station, 2CH." So I applied and they offered me the job, making me the youngest radio announcer in Australia."

To many Australians, Bud will be best remembered for his cameo appearance in The Castle as lawyer Lawrence Hammill. Bud was quoted as saying that the film helped him recover from the death of his wife not long before.

On May 15, 2009, Bud lost his battle with prostate cancer. He was 86 years old.

He died a World War II veteran, loving husband and father, and a cinematic Australian legend.

Leave your thoughts on the passing of Bud.

What a great example of a graceful and respected human being Bud Tingwell was. He moved quietly through life yet left his impression on so many in a positive way. I will miss seeing him on our screens.
