Bela Fleck's African Project featuring Oumou Sangar and Band
    When 09 April 2010
    Venue Festival Theatre
    Time 8pm

    A finger-pickin' night of African banjo-beats.

Described as the premiere banjo player in the world multi Grammy Award winner Bla Fleck and his renowned ensemble the Flecktones have taken the banjo across the global musical map through collaborations with musical legends as diverse as Chick Corea, Sting, Bobby McFerrin, Bonnie Rait and even the Grateful Dead.

Most recently Bla Flecks African Project traced origins of the banjo, the prototype of which was brought to American shores by African slaves. In Africa, Fleck found common musical ground with some of Africas leading musicians, including international superstar Malian diva Oumou Sangar.

The African Project resulted in Flecks most ambitious recording, Throw Down Your Heart and a companion award-winning documentary of the same name.

Oumou Sangar is described as one of Malis greatest female voices. She sings about love and the importance of freedom backed up by her trademark funk-driven Wassoulou sound. Sangar has toured with Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti and more recently has duetted with stars such as Alicia Keys, MeShell Ndgocello, and Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour.

Bla Fleck will join Oumou Sangares 12 piece Malian band on stage for a finger-pickin night of African banjo-beats.

Winner of 11 Grammys Fleck has been nominated in more categories than anyone in Grammy history.

One of the worlds great female singers... Sangar is one of those rare stars... Daily Telegraph
