Would you believe...
Get Smart - The TV Series
Get Smart was a classic - an American comedy series that managed to be both hilariously funny, ribald, risqué, and nothing short of hilarious, combining elements of James Bond and the Pink Panther movies.
It originally ran from 1965 to 1971, but the 138 broadcast episodes have been shown many, many times over the time since then, with a massive cult following developing as a result.
And how could you not love this show? Created by the brilliant Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, it introduced such phrases as the 'Cone of Silence', 'Missed it by THAT much', 'Good thinking, 99', 'Sorry about that, Chief' and 'Would you believe...' into the lexicon.
It starred Don Adams as Agent 86, a.k.a. Maxwell Smart, a bumbling secret agent for CONTROL. Nevertheless, with the help of former game show model Barbara Feldon's Agent 99, the Chief (played by Edward Platt), and his ever-trusty shoe phone, he was able to continually halt the master plans of those ever dastardly bad guys, KAOS.
Don Adams was not the original choice for the role of Maxwell Smart, but he was given the role as he was under contract to the television network at the time. Many of the one-liners were his own inventions, as he'd previously done a stand-up comedy routine based around the life of a secret agent.
Don Adams appeared in every one of the 138 episodes of the show, while Barbara Feldon appeared in 131. After watching the inaugural episode, Adams reportedly couldn't stand the added laugh-track, and never watched another episode ever again!
Several film versions of Get Smart have been produced, including the 1980 box office bomb The Nude Bomb, and 1989's TV movie Get Smart, Again!, both with Don Adams and Barbara Feldon reprising their roles.
The 2008 remake find Steve Carrell playing Max, Anne Hathaway as Agent 99, and Alan Arkin as the Chief.
