Noel Gallagher Admits: "I'm Average" Post by: MMMusic 29 January, 2009 - 8:43 AM

If we had a front page, we’d be saying: Hold the front page - Noel Gallagher admits he’s a crap guitarist! And now for something we didn’t know...

The Oasis head-honcho has told Total Guitar magazine that he doesn’t rate himself very highly on the instrument that has helped make him so filthy rich.

The eldest Gallagher described his playing ability as "average", noting that he gets a bit embarrassed when he compares himself to mates like Johnny Marr [formerly of The Smiths] and Paul Weller [ex-The Jam and Style Council].

"On the electric guitar, they’re it," said Gallagher. "So if you’re asking me how do I compare to those two – and I like to compare myself to the greats – I’m average at f***ing best."

And his friends don’t disagree with him. “Bless him, but his playing is rudimentary," Paul Weller said in Gallagher's non-defence. "But Noel doesn’t pretend to be a guitar god. He's very good at putting chords together and he’s got a distinctive style in terms of his chord sequences and his rhythm playing. It’s recognisable, I suppose."

Since we’re being honest, maybe we should also discuss the standard of Gallagher’s songwriting over the last decade.

Is Noel Gallagher a guitar God? Can he still write a decent song? Tell us what you think.

I reckon Noel is an ace guitar - and the best thing about his stuff is that it's NOT difficult to play at all.

However, it seems like his best songwriting days are well behind him.

Great songwriter, he's a down to earth geezer.

Why does music have to be "complicated"? If it catches your imagination then the jobs done.

    Peace,
    Steve

Noel admits he's not that good, he doesn't profess to be a great guitarist - he's mainly a rhythm player. And he's a great rhythm player and a fantastic songwriter. I'm currently having mandolin lessons as of now, and after listening to some oasis songs, i was inspired to shift to guitars..
