Powderfinger's Last, Last Ever Gig Post by: Dave-O 22 November, 2010 - 9:44 AM

Triple M's EJ went to a big event on the weekend and she couldn't believe she was invited. It was Powderfinger's last, last ever concert… and it wasn't at the Riverstage or part of their Sunsets Farewell Tour. It was a private party for friends and family at the Tivoli in Brisbane.

"It was lovely because it was like a wedding," said EJ on Triple M Brisbane's The Cage this morning. "Everyone was walking up to each other and instead of saying 'Who do you know? The bride of the groom?' It was 'Which band member are you friendly with?'."

She said the final gig at one of Brisbane's most iconic venues was really nice and there was a lot of love and devotion in the air for the boys as they ended their 20-year journey as a band in front of family and friends.

"There was everyone there from old roadies and publicans who gave them their first gig to cousins, wives and friends of wives who kept wives company on long tours away. It was really nice. Everyone was intertwined and everyone had a genuine devotion to the boys in the band."

And that love was repaid when the boys took to the stage for one last time.

"Two hours into the night the boys played not just any gig," she said. They told stories, got old friends up on stage to play drums or sing a duet, they told jokes, did celebratory shots and took us on a lovely 20-year journey of the band while thanking those who meant to the most to them."

"Darren Middleton [guitarist] even acknowledged his parents for putting up the cash to pay for their first EP. He promised way back then to buy them a castle in return when he was really rich and apologised for not being able to… because Brisbane is a bit short on Castles."

EJ was invited to the special family and friends break-up party by Powderfinger bassist JC after she made an impression on him when they met six months ago.

"I did the ‘Oh look, there's a famous person standing right in front of me play it cool around the celebrity' type thing at the Normanby hotel," she remembers.

"Straight after that my cool factor sky rocketed when I spilt my red wine all over him and me while racing to introduce myself."
