Rob Thomas spent last night in a studio in Sydney with members of INXS, re-recording a new version of the band’s classic “Never Tear Us Apart”.
The Daily Telegraph in Sydney has reported that the “surviving” members of INXS are recording a covers album of their own greatest hits, using different vocalists for each song.
Thomas, currently on a brief promo visit to Australia to announce his upcoming concert tour here, has made no secret of his admiration of INXS. In fact, he has admitted the song “Meltdown” from his latest solo album, Candlesong, is a “complete rip-off” of “Need You Tonight”.
“When I got on the phone from New York to talk to them about their record, I told them right up front: 'I want to say that I hope you guys don’t mind I completely tried to rip you off',” Thomas said.
During Matchbox Twenty’s last Australian tour, INXS drummer Jon Farriss joined the band on stage during the final show of the tour and bashed out versions of “Never Tear Us Apart” and “Don’t Change”.
Thomas has previously stated his admiration for Michael Hutchence. “He’s one of the greatest frontmen of any rock band, of any band,” Thomas said.
No more details about the INXS album are known at this stage, but some of us won’t be holding our breath.
What do you think? Does the world need an INXS cover record by INXS? [Please watch the Michael Hutchence clip at the top of the story before answering.]
oh. not a good idea.
it's a great idea! can't wait to hear what the voice of matchbox 20 can do with the sound of inxs!
Oh, noooooooo!!! I love Matchbox 20, Rob stick with it pleaaaaaase.
Give us more Matchbox 20 songs. Can't get enough of them and can't wait for your guys perform in Adl.again. Saw you at your last concert & it can't be soon enough to see you again.
Awesome idea - I'm a diehard fan, have been since 1981.
No-one will ever replace Michael Hutchence, but I would love to hear Rob Thomas giving it a crack!
He has a very distinctive sound which would fit like a glove with INXS. Can't wait to hear it!
I heard Rob Thomas sing 'Never Tear Us Apart' in concert, it was brilliant but no one can ever replace Michael. He was unique.
I think this INXS project is a great idea. But they really need to re-consider working with JD again down the track. He brought a new legion of fans along to INXS concerts.
Whatever happened between INXS and JD (or lack thereof) - it doesn't matter. A lot of fans were disheartened from a long time ago by the fact that INXS have been really distant from them and haven't kept them up to date with what's going on.
Everyone was expecting a new album with JD a year ago - but nothing happened. So everyone waited... and waited... and waited. If JD hadn't said anything on that trashy gossip show, would we still have been waiting for a new album with JD, or would INXS have let us know that they were working on this collaboration project? I wonder...
And for the record - JD never actually said he was fired - the story was edited to get the headline they wanted. All JD wanted to know was what was going on with INXS. And so did the fans.
I don't think he should change bands, not even for a try. He's absolutely great with Matchbox 20 and should stick with it.
I would love to hear much more new Matchbox 20 songs. They are just the greatest band ever.
Please Rob, give us some more songs with Matchbox 20. Last concert was A M A ZI N G !!!!!
