Rob Thomas Returns Alone Post by: MMMusic 30 April, 2009 - 3:22 PM

Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas has revealed he’s gone a bit Mardi Gras for his second solo album, Cradlesong, which will be out June 30. Well, if not Mardi Gras, at last a little Latin American.

Influenced by Paul Simon’s world music projects like Graceland and Rhythm Of The Saints, Thomas’ new record will heavily feature South American, as well as African, percussive sounds.

Of course, this is not entirely new to Thomas, who had a monster worldwide hit in 1999 with “Smooth”, his Samba-flavoured collaboration with Santana.

The first single from Cradlesong will be a track called “Her Diamonds”, which hits airwaves around the world from next week, but can be heard from today at his website: www.robthomasmusic.com

Thomas’ debut album, 2005’s Something to Be, sold 1.5 million copies in the US alone. Pittance, really, compared to Matchbox Twenty’s 16 million album sales.

Do you prefer Matchbox Twenty or Rob Thomas solo?

I prefer him solo. It's not that he sounds bad when in group but he can do without them. Don't get me wrong, I also love Matchbox Twenty. But I love Rob Thomas more.
