SAPOL Official Statement:
A man has been shot by police in Hindley Street after his car was tracked following an alleged assault in Cumberland Park.
Just before 9pm on Monday 28 November, police received a report of an assault between a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman in Cumberland Park. Police were also advised another male intervened and was allegedly threatened with a firearm.
Police discovered that a car was seen leaving the area driven by the suspect with the woman and a 3-year-old girl and 7-month-old boy inside.
The car was spotted on Marion Road in South Plympton at 10.20pm and monitored by Polair. The car was tracked to Port Adelaide and then spiked at the intersection of Grand Junction and South Road. It was then followed by STAR group patrols to Hampstead Road and then to the city via North East Road. In the city, the car travelled through city streets and along Rundle Mall, before STAR patrols stopped the car in Hindley Street at 11.30pm.
Police will allege the driver threatened one of the children with the firearm and a single shot was fired by police. The man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
Officers are being praised for the way they dealt with this very difficult situation.
