QLD Researchers May Have Found A Way To Kill Salmonella In Bagged Salads
Those bagged salads you buy at the supermarket could soon be pumped with "friendly" bacteria.
UQ researchers are looking into the plan in a bid to prevent potentially deadly outbreaks of salmonella and listeria.
They've found bacteria commonly found in fermented foods like sauerkraut can naturally kill bacteria which is harmful to humans.
"These bacteria have been eaten by people in fermented foods for hundreds of years, so we don't anticipate there'll be any health effects," Prof Turner told AAP.
"In fact, there might even be some health benefits."
The research follows a major outbreak of salmonella in February centred around Victoria and South Australia, with more than 300 cases recorded.
