A teenage cyclist is fighting for his life after a hit-run in West Melbourne involving a four-wheel drive.

The victim, believed to be 18 years old, suffered head injuries when crossing the intersection of Dryburgh Street and Dynon Road in West Melbourne with a bike just before 1am on Friday.

Police are searching for the driver of a light-coloured 4WD which sped away from the scene likely with damage to its front lights.

Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor said someone got out of the vehicle 100 metres from the intersection, looked back at the man on the road, and then "made a conscious decision" to drive away.

"It's disturbing to see someone hit by a motor vehicle anytime, let alone (when) someone leaves the scene without giving a care about the poor person who is left on the road," he said on radio this morning.

"Really ... it's a despicable act."
