Cilmi was born on October 10, 1991 in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong, and at a young age she acquired an interest in a wide range of musical styles, including Nina Simone, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, The Sweet, T-Rex and Cat Stevens.
Despite her natural aptitude and vocal talent, she was told that she lacked the discipline necessary to pursue a singing career. Idolising Janis Joplin, during this time she sang with a band performing cover songs by Led Zeppelin, Jet, Silverchair and other popular artists. In 2004 she captured the attention of Michael Parisi, a record company executive from Warner Music, while giving an impromptu rendition of the Rolling Stones' song "Jumping Jack Flash" at a the Lygon Street Festa, a community festival in Melbourne. Funnily enough, it's often been rumoured that Vanessa Amorosi was discovered at the same festival ten years earlier! (She wasn't; she was found singing at a Russian restaurant in 1997.)
At the age of thirteen, Cilmi travelled to the U.S.A. and U.K. was offered major label deals by four different U.S. labels, before eventually signing a contract with Island Records U.K. Cilmi's first album Lessons To Be Learned was written and recorded with hit production team Xenomania and was released on 31 March 2008 in the UK. She has been compared to Amy Winehouse and also Macy Gray because of the occasional tendency for her voice to fracture.
The single "Sweet About Me" debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number sixty-eight and rose to number fifty the following week. It reached its highest position of number six so far, on the chart dated June 15, 2008. It has also so far reached number seventeen in the Irish Singles Chart, and debuted at number thirteen in Australia on downloads alone, and has peaked at number one.
Her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, hit the second spot on the charts after being released on May 10, 2008.
