The Redemption Of Mitch Morton Posted by James Brayshaw 3 June, 2009 - 2:56 PM

The usual suspects bob up for nomination for my MVP every week...

This week Carlton's Marc Murphy would have been a very worthy recipient...as would Mark LeCras...a very good small forward playing in a very dysfunctional forward line.

But rarely does a single act get you a spot in the MVP stratosphere, but this week, for Mitch Morton that's exactly what's happened.

Three weeks ago, at AAMI Stadium, Morton's lack of polish in the final stages of that fateful game against Port Adelaide, cost the Tigers according to those who matter. On the back of this Morton was on the end of the type of spray we have all copped (in my game it was the captain that delivered them not the coach, but they were still brutal).

The fact that he copped that on the chin, fronted up to the media during the ensuing week and owned up to his error, looked straight down the barrel and declared he 'owed' the Tigers was admirable enough.

What I loved was on the weekend, at Subiaco oval, with the game on the line, Morton hit up to a beautifully presented ball from Trent Cochin (another very good young act), took the chest mark, went to ground, got up, played on, swung around and slotted in from 30 out. It was just sensational.

Footy Gods? Karma train? Natural justice?

Who knows but it was bloody ace. Everyone in football would have seen that and thought "that is great".

Good for you Mitch ''the merino shagged'' Morton. One snap at goal does not a career make, but the way you carried yourself was a credit to you and your family (who I also know a bit about and they are high quality).

A worthy Triple MVP winner!!!
