GWS forward Steve Johnson has taken to Twitter to explain his strange thumb injury.

The Giants star ruptured a tendon in his thumb reaching for his phone last week, an injury that raised some eyebrows.

Johnson appeared at the 2016 AFL draft to announce pick 24 - the pick he was selected at 15 years ago - with a giant cast on his left hand.

Turns out there's more to it.

"I had a bit of a sore wrist at the end of the season but wasn't too concerned about it," he wrote.

"After playing golf a couple of weeks ago it got really sore. I sought treatment and had an injection to settle down some inflammation."

But the injury didn't settle down.

"A few days later I was out for lunch and after picking up my daughter and putting a chair back in at the cafe I noticed my forearm had gone numb," he continued.

"So I decided I would call the doctor and ask if this was normal post injection, when I reached to get my phone I realised my thumb wasn't functioning. The tendon which had been rubbing on a bone spur in my wrist had ruptured."

That clears everything up...
