"It was just too hard"

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has told defender Matt Suckling was just not fit enough to force his way into the Bulldogs' grand final side.

Suckling was named as an emergency for the decider, but has battled an Achilles issue over the last few weeks, missing three games between Round 19 and 22 before being withdrawn from the Bulldogs' preliminary final side.

According to Beveridge, his fitness just wasn't good enough.

"It's just really tough to omit anyone," he said on Friday. "Matty has had a sore Achilles for a fair period of time now and we've had to manage his workloads and training quite differently to the rest of the group.

"It's disappointing for Matty, but it was just too hard to omit one of his teammates."

Beveridge said Suckiling could still play if needed.

""We've still got him there (as an emergency) if we need him," he suggested.
