Eddie McGuire Puts The 3 Strikes Rumour To Bed After Buddy Franklin Misses 6th Game
Hawthorn's Lance Franklin missed Sunday's match against the Gold Coast with what has been described as a 24-hour flu. His absence stirred up another round of internet rumours over whether there is more to his six-week absence from the game.
UPDATE: Hawthorn has followed up on the Triple M Hot Breakfast's discussion regarding rumours surrounding star player Lance Franklin by declaring recent widespread internet chatter as 'rubbish'.
The Hawks' Football Operations Manager, Mark Evans, also hit back and urged the talk to stop.
"We've heard all of the conspiracy theories and rumours, and I need to tell you they are absolute rubbish," Evans said, after Triple M's Eddie McGuire earlier told listeners the AFL would never cover up a player being on three illicit drug strikes.
You'd only have to either have a Twitter or Facebook account to have seen some of the many scurrilous rumours about Franklin, which have not been substantiated by the AFL, the club or any major media outlet.
"People need to be very careful about how you report that, and how the commentary goes. You shouldn't go there."
"The sorts of things we've heard is that it's an AFL or club suspension, that he's re-done his hamstring, that he took two weeks off to go to the Olympics. Just absolute rubbish. He was ill, and we're hopeful that he'll play this week."
Franklin has missed the past six matches; five courtesy of a hamstring injury and the latest because of an illness.
EARLIER: Hawthorn's Lance Franklin missed Sunday's match against the Gold Coast with what has been described as a 24-hour flu. His absence stirred up another round of internet rumours over whether there is more to his six-week absence from the game.
However, Triple M's Eddie McGuire explained to listeners the AFL could never cover that up if the rumours were true; making reference to unfounded rumours about whether he was on three strikes under the AFL's drug policy.
"It can't happen because it has to be announced straight away. Any three strikes thing, if anybody is making up any rumours and innuendo and all that sort of stuff, it is legislated that if a player has a third strike it must go straight to the tribunal," said McGuire. "Straight away!"
Franklin was supposed to miss only 2-3 weeks with a hamstring injury but has now missed 6 weeks.

"My understanding is he genuinely woke up sick, had a three week hamstring and in his own mind thought there's still a little bit of tightness I don't want to be seen to be doing it again then it's my season over potentially," Luke Darcy said on Triple M Melbourne's The Hot Breakfast Monday morning.
"Well there's a few crook. I came back yesterday and went down to Collingwood and they're all huffing and puffing down there, which I hope is the excuse for Saturday night," added McGuire.
Hawthorn is up to second on the ladder after a 129-65 win over the Gold Coast.
Luke Darcy says Buddy Franklin is "100 per cent" to play against Sydney this weekend in the top-of-the-table clash.
