Four Favourites Are Vying For The One Flag Post by: Hamish McLachlan 24 August, 2009 - 2:43 PM

1. Four Favourites One Flag

What did that old Chinese philosopher say... 'a week is a long time in football'.

Two weeks ago, the Saints were unbeatable and you couldn't see how they could get beaten until finals time. Since then they have lost two games, at Etihad, where they are - or were - unbeatable.

I reckon they are finding it hard mentally to keep 'up' while they are treading water for finals. They will be a different side in a fortnight.

The Cats were unbeaten, and since they had a loss, are four wins and four losses and lucky not to be one win from the last eight.

They have stars to come in, and I reckon they will lift a gear or two when finals roll around.

The Pies are on fire and look rock solid, have no injuries and are thumping sides, and the Dogs have not looked better than the last two weeks at the Gabba and against the Cats at Etihad.

Don't reckon there should be anything in the premiership betting between these four - can't split them any more. I reckon we are due for the best finals series in years.

2. Grand Stand Finish

What a season we have had, and what a final round it promises to be.

Who would have thought the last round would see:

Third play fourth to see who finishes third and who finishes fourth.

Five play six to see who gets to host a home final.

Seven play ten to keep a home final chance alive.

Eight play nine to see who plays finals.

It's a beautiful script...

3. Adam Goodes Really Really Good

Watched him again yesterday versus the very very good Magpies. He is all class. Not sure what happens to the Swans when he disappears. He always has time, rarely wastes the ball, seems to always find the right option, wins the ball by himself and runs all day.

The Swans will lose Leo Barry, Micky O, Tadgh Kennelly, Barry Hall and Jared Crouch this year... They need the youth to keep getting better as they are, and need Goodes to stay fit, stop getting older, and get half a dozen others to learn from his brilliance before he retires.

He is a star.

4. Power Out

Finally, the Power has gone out in Adelaide:

Question: What sides have kicked ten goals straight in a first quarter? Answer: Only one ever has - Port Power.

Question: Is it possible to lose after doing that? Answer: Only just.

Was it surprising? Not really.

Why? Because it was the Power, and the Power seemingly, are capable of just about anything right now.

Not sure you will believe this, but at quarter time, we were calling the Tigers and Hawks game and the box looked at each other and said 'the Power can blow this up - Lions aren't gone'.

Mark Williams must wonder what the hell is going on at times. He must feel like he is coaching the character Jim Carey played in My, Myself and Irene. Either a normal, easy going team that is easy to coach... Or a schizophrenic freak show capable of anything.

5. Usain Bolt Would Start A Warm Favourite In The Grand Final Sprint

Love to see him at the Grand Final. Think it is a long shot, but how good would it be to see him take on Andrew Lovett and a few others?

Best athlete of all time, and possibly with Tiger and Roger, the best known athlete in the world. Would be great to get him, but I think it will fall over.

Finals are coming...

How do you think the final round will roll out?
