Selector Luke Darcy Says North Melbourne Ruckman Todd Goldstein Unlucky To Miss Out On All-Australian Team
Luke Darcy explains why Todd Goldstein was overlooked for All-Aussie honours.
All-Australian team selector Luke Darcy told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast on Tuesday that North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein was very unlucky to miss out on a guernsey.
West Coast champion Dean Cox and Goldstein’s team-mate Drew Petrie were the two recognised ruckmen who were given the nod.
Goldstein led all comers in the hit-out department this season with 741 at an average of 35 a match, but Darcy explained that Petrie’s versatility saw him edge Goldstein out for the second ruck spot behind Cox.
“Todd Goldstein is pretty unlucky not to be in it to be honest with you, he had a sensational year,” Luke told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.
“Drew Petrie got the role and it was probably based more on the fact that that second ruckman (is based on) a bit that role (Collingwood utility) Leigh Brown plays and that’s what Petrie does.”
“He kicked 48.41 for the year, I thought he had an unbelievable year coming back from three broken feet.”
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire agreed with Petrie’s selection ahead of Goldstein but wasn’t as pleased with Gold Coast skipper Gary Ablett being named the All-Australian captain ahead of Carlton superstar Chris Judd.
“Politically correct that one ... I think Judd was the standout,” Eddie said.
Luke admitted there was a lot of debate over who should captain the side but he wasn’t bothered by Ablett being awarded the honour.
“A lot of those ones (decisions), the way it comes down when you’re selecting the side, if there are three or four people who disagree you actually have a silent vote,” Luke explained.
“That was one of the ones that I think, again, could have gone either way.”
