India 400x240

Australia Lose Cricket.

After a summer of nastiness between to the two teams, Australia couldn't back their words in the ends and lost the Tri-Nation Final last night at the Gabba.

Australia fell short of India's total of 9-258, for their second successive failure in the one-day series, after they lost to England last year.

Adelaide Test
Adelaide Oval
January 24-28

After the Perth Test, the confidence of the Indian team was seemingly restored to its pre-tour levels, where they were claiming that they would more than challenge Australia on home soil... before being soundly beaten in both Melbourne and Sydney.

After the race and umpiring and behaviour debacle in Sydney, however, India looked like a team inspired in Perth, whereas the Australian side seemed to take a step back, not going for the jugular as it usually does.

As such, Australia reverted to the side that saw it have such success in the first two Tests, with hamstrung opener Matt Hayden returning at the expense of Perth debutant Chris Rogers, and left-arm wrist spinner Brad Hogg regaining his place in favour of the wayward and uninspiring Shaun Tait, who missed out on making his debut at Test level at his home ground of Adelaide Oval.

India omitted opener Wasim Jaffer, in favour of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. Somewhat surprisingly, they elevated seamer Irfan Pathan to the top of the order to open alongside Virender Sehwag.

Sadly, the pitch was decidedly lifeless, and proved to be a batsman's dream. Sachin Tendulkar, Matt Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Virender Sehwag all piled up big hundred, and both pacemen and spinners alike found it difficult to get much 'lift' out of the pitch, with the game petering out to a draw. Perhaps the most notable incident was Adam Gilchrist's decision to retire.

Australia retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy with a 2-1 result. Whether or not the same result will be repeated when they visit the subcontinent in October, 2008, remains to be seen...
