Injury has come at the worst possible time for New South Wales spinner Steve O'Keefe, who has picked up a calf strain.

O'Keefe will only bat if required on the final day of his Sheffield Shield match against Victoria after straining his calf in the field.

The 31-year-old had been tipped to overtake Nathan Lyon as Australia's preferred spinner for the third Test next week.

O'Keefe took match figures of 3/113 against the Victorians, who sit in a dominant position in their Shield match.

Lyon in comparison went wicketless, taking 0/173 for the match.

O'Keefe has played three Tests for Australia, taking 10 wickets at an average of 35.60, after last losing his spot due to a hamstring injury in Sri Lanka.

The squad is expected to be announced on Sunday afternoon.
