Despite wrapping up Bevan French until the end of 2018, the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Parramatta are set to make a play for exciting rookie Kalyn Ponga.

Ponga's only played two NRL games, making his debut for the Cowboys in the 2016 finals series.

However, he's already attracted attention from eight clubs and will go on the open market on 1 November.

He's contracted to the Cowboys until the end of next year.

Ponga has also garnered praise from QLD Maroons coach Kevvie Walters, who is reportedly making a play for Ponga to be a part of the emerging Maroons squad.

Add in the fact that he's eligible to play for either Australia or New Zealand, and it's safe to say that there will be plenty of headlines about Ponga's choices this year.

A real revelation for the Cowboys this season has been Kalyn Ponga, who made his debut in the 2016 finals series and stirred talk that he may be the next Johnathan ThurstonCheck out a superb clip of Ponga's form below.

According to the Daily Telegraph, as many as seven clubs are chasing the Cowboys prodigy, with his current deal expiring at the end of 2017.

The Broncos, Titans, Knights, Dragons, Bulldogs, Storm and the Cowboys will all be vying for his signature when he goes on the open market.

And it was only last week that he found himself a manager.

"Rather than him being the next JT, we want him to be the first KP," manager Rushton said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

"He is extremely humble, he's capable of playing half a dozen sports at the top level. He was a 13-year-old golf champion, could have played AFL, could have played union, can turn his hand to anything. He is a pure athlete.

"The club he goes to need to respect that he is from a tight-knit family.

"There's been a fair bit of enquiry about what he's doing and where he's going but he is committed to the Cowboys for 2017.

"It's all about getting a good environment around him."
