Petero Civoniceva has been granted an early release from his contract with the Penrith Panthers so he can return to Brisbane.

The news comes after a meeting Civoniceva had with the club's general manager Phil Gould expressing his desire to return home to be with his family.

Triple M's Mark Geyer was shocked by the news, saying the Panthers captain will be missed.

"[Panthers supporters] thought all was well at the foot of the mountains; obviously not," he said.

"He'll be sorely missed, but I wish him well on his future endeavors."

Civoniceva has since signed a one year deal with the Brisbane Broncos.

"A good coup for the Broncos but a bad loss for the Panthers", MG said.

Is this good news for the Broncos?
