Michael Phelps Breaks The Record For Most Olympic Medals By Winning His 19th
American swimmer Michael Phelps has set a new record for the most Olympic medals.
Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian in history as the United States led all the way to win the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final in London on Tuesday.
Phelps collected his 19th Olympic medal, taking him one past the 18 won by 77-year-old Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, as he brought home the US team in six minutes and 59.70 seconds.
France (7:02.77) were second ahead of China, who took bronze in 7:06.30.
Australia's team of Thomas Fraser-Holmes, Kenrick Monk, Ned McKendry and Ryan Napoleon was in contention for a medal for a long way before dropping back to finish fifth in 7:07.00.
It was Phelps' third medal in London after he earlier took silver in the 200m butterfly and had the same result in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday.
Phelps now has 15 gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
