Sonny Bill has finally put pen to paper and announced he will play for Japanese club Panasonic.

The move which he says he been "very emotional" to make and one he "has to do" will be followed by a move to an as-of-yet named NRL club.

The decision he says was not swayed by financial reasons despite rumours of a $2M package being offered in total across rugby, boxing and NRL.

"If it was about the money I would have stayed in France where I was getting good coin," said Sonny Bill of his time playing for Toulon.

"There is always an element of risk with every decision you take," Sonny Bill told a packed press conference in Hamilton as Kiwi journalists burst out into song to say goodbye.

Sonny Bill's decision to say 'konnichiwa' to Japan means he will say 'sayonara' to the All Blacks and will not play in the forthcoming Rugby Championship which starts this August.

Former Wallaby Greg Martin said "great timing" of the decision with his Super Rugby team The Chiefs gearing up for their crucial match this Friday.

The Chiefs current lead the Super Rugby table but are only one point ahead of the Stormers from South Africa. To ensure a home farewell for Sonny, The Chiefs must win their match against the Highlanders.

Chiefs fans have nothing to worry about though with SBW confirming he'd play for free if he did return!

"If I did ever come back to rugby, I'd play for the Chiefs even if there was no money, I'd play for free."

Despite wild accusations on Twitter that Sonny Bill might be signing for AFL team the Giants, or even becoming the England soccer goalkeeper, SBW said he was "content" with where he is going.
