Blunt shooting sheriffs

November 13, 2008

A US Sherriff has banned his deputies from carrying guns when off-duty and out drinking

Sheriff Lee Baca of Los Angeles County has decided to take action after numerous drunken deputies have been accused of firing while drunk.

In the last four years more than 12 sheriffs have been charged with drawing their weapon or shooting while drunk. More than 60 deputies have been arrested this year for alcohol-related charges, mostly for driving under the influence - many of whom had their guns with them at the time.

Baca's department is also behind the arrest of Mel Gibson in 2006, and the controversial early release of Paris Hilton from jail to house arrest in 2007.
