Stolen church

November 13, 2008

A 200-year-old Russian church has been stolen.

An unknown culprit stole the Russian Orthodox church brick by brick from the village of Komarovo in central Russia.

The church was in a remote area, not in use, and only occasionally visited by church officials; although it had been proposed that services be started again soon.

The stealing of church artefacts is common in rural areas of Russia, where they can then be sold for profit. Some buildings have also been known to be dismantled and re-used as building materials.

Father Vitaly, a spokesman for the local Russian Orthodoxy said: "We have sent a letter to local prosecutors - who exactly did this, the investigation will show."
