A helicopter has spectacularly broken apart and crashed to the ground as it's pilot was trying to put up Christmas decorations.

The terrifying scene was broadcast live as TV cameras followed the transformation of Auckland waterfront for the festive season.

The chopper can be seen shuddering as a nearby pylon severes it's tail sending it crashing to the ground in bits.

Amazingly no one on the ground or the pilot was hurt.
