'Finger Join Rock Royalty Post by: Dave-O 30 August, 2010 - 8:43 PM
Powderfinger aren't known for rock n' roll excess, but the guys have just joined Led Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses in an elite group of rock royalty who choose to tour in their own private jet.
So are they just indulging themselves on what is their last ever tour? Maybe. But really when you look at the distances they're covering on this their final tour it makes so much sense. They've sold 300,000 tickets and they're playing everywhere in Australia including Darwin and Hobart.
We met up with drummer Jon "Cogsy" Coghill at the press conference, which was on the tarmac of Newcastle Airport, and started by asking him why they chose Newcastle as the place to get the tour started?
"Newcastle has a great entertainment centre that we can hire out for a few days and rehearse in so we can get a feel for the light show and video show, running around the audience, catwalk, taking your clothes off and all that type of stuff," he laughs.
Cogsy's joking, of course. But underneath the 'Finger's laidback attitude is a band that's excited about the biggest shows of their career.
"It's exciting. We've just done a month's rehearsal and we've got all these ideas for the show that we have to pull off."
He's hinted that fans should expect loads of surprises at the shows. "The set's from the whole twenty years and we're putting some obscure songs in there.
"I think we're playing a song called "Capoicity", it's from [1998's] Internationalist and we hardly ever play it. We're doing things like that."
