Powderfinger kicked off their final tour of Australia in Newcastle last night with a barnstorming 2-hour extravaganza that has cemented their place in history as one of Australia's most successful rock bands.
And singer Bernard Fanning assured the 'Finger army it was a time for celebration. "This is not sad, let’s just enjoy it and get on with it," he said before launching into a storming version of "Love Your Way" from 2003's Vulture Street.
Triple M's Kim Blair was one of the 7,000 fans to cram the Newcastle Entertainment Centre to see the magic happen. "The light show was the biggest they've ever used, with lasers and a massive video screen behind the guys," he said.
"They kicked off with "Love Your Way", [and then] ran through a setlist that took in songs from the early years of Double Allergic to the Golden Rule.
"[Everyone] knew the words; testament to just how much the band has seeped into our culture. It would have been hard to choose from such a big catalogue but fans won’t be disappointed with the big ones all there."
After 2 hours and two encores flew by they wrapped up the last ever Newcastle show with "These Days".
The Sunsets Farewell Tour heads to the Gold Coast tomorrow.
