Pearl Jam have announced fans who buy the new album Backspacer next week will be able to download two classic concerts from the band’s archives for free.
It’s also been confirmed that the official release date for Backspacer in Australia will be September 18 – that’s Friday-week – which means we’ll get to hear the album two full days before the rest of the world!
No matter how you buy the record – CD or download – you’ll be given access to a selection of audio from 11 fairly recent Pearl Jam gigs and be allowed to download two full shows, which means over five hours of free Pearl Jam music.
The gigs up for offer are: Halifax (22/09/05), Philadelphia (03/10/05), Santiago (21/11/05), Chicago (17/05/06), Grand Rapids (19/05/06), Camden (28/05/06), E Rutherford (06/03/06), San Francisco (16/07/06), New York (25/06/06), Hartford (27/06/08) and Mansfield (28/06/08).
The live concert audio can be accessed by inserting the Backspacer disc into your computer or by clicking through links provided by iTunes and Getmusic.com.au when you buy Backspacer.
The band has also left the option open to offer more freebies through the same method.
And don’t forget – Pearl Jam's Australian tour is now only two months away, kicking off in Perth on 14 November. How f**king exciting is all this!
We accused Pearl Jam of selling out last week, but are they in fact the most generous band on the planet?

I think this a brilliant incentive to purchasing the album. If more artists did this IMHO there would be a lot less illegal distribution and legal disputes with the music industry.
I know it won't stop the illegal distribution altogether but atleast it is step forward. Good on you Pearl Jam!
