What is Youncare all about?
Imagine being a spirited 23 year old with a bright future ahead, and without warning you suffer a catastrophic accident or illness. Suddenly you face the prospect of having to reside in aged care simply because there are no alternatives. Clearly this is inappropriate.
Sadly though, this scenario has become a reality for almost 6500 young Australians who are currently living in aged care facilities Australia wide.
Everyday in Australia, one young person will enter an aged care facility due to a lack of alternatives and thousands more are at risk at doing so.
Of those young people residing in aged care facilities, a recent study by Di Winkler for the Australian Health Review (2005) revealed some shocking truths. Statistics show that:
* 21% of young people in aged care facilities go outside less than once a month.
* 44% of young people in aged care facilities receive a visit from friends less than once a year.
* 34% of young people in aged care facilities participate in a community-based event such as shopping, almost never.
The issues surrounding people with disabilities are broad and complex requiring us to address home care and holiday needs, providing solutions for all young people with high care needs, their families and carers.
