Shock horror! Super Rugby body SANZAR has appointed two South African refs for the Elimination Finals despite two SA teams playing.

"We are delighted to announce that Jaco [Peyper] and Jonathan [Kaplan] will referee the first matches on this season's Super Rugby Finals series," SANZAR Game Manager Lyndon Bray told the media.

Referees were selected based on overall performance, accuracy of big calls and the 'right fit for the game.'

The decision will spark fierce debate with South African referees now involved in a game featuring South African teams.

"With Super Rugby moving into the finals we need as much free flowing rugby as possible," said Triple M Announcer Woody.

Triple M's Woody was referring to Kaplan's charge of the Reds Highlanders game in Round 17.

"He disabled what could have been a free-flowing game of rugby," said Woody with many people in the crowd overheard shouting 'we came to see the players not you ref.'
