Mountain tunnel

Villagers in China have spent five years building a tunnel through a mountain, almost entirely by hand.

Residents of Matigou village have built the 6' by 6' tunnel to Shiyan City using primitive tools in order to save lives. Previously the only way of making the trip was via a bumpy, narrow mountainside road - from which many people have fallen to their death.

Village chief Wen Changfa said: "When we had money, we would buy a small amount of explosives, but tunnel construction was slow. Each day we could dig less than one metre forward."

"The direct distance was five miles, but it took take half a day for villagers to reach the city to sell field produce and buy necessities."

The journey time is now half an hour.
