Your weekly fix of the weird and bizarre

Funny money

January 1, 2009

A man who wrote a cheque to pay a parking fine on toilet paper was forced to sit at the back of a court room as punishment.

Richard Roper, 63, of Suffolk, England, claims the makeshift cheque was his way of making a peaceful protest against the £30 ticket.

However, police refused to cash it, claiming the unconventional payment would cost them £15 to process.

The retired businessman was forced to sit through the court's morning session by the judge.

Roper told the court: "This is not a case of refusing to pay but a case of the authorities refusing to accept my payment."

He added: "My payment has been written on stationery which aptly reflects my feelings towards the system."

His offer to double the fine to give to East Anglian Children's Hospice was refused by police.
