Guns 'n' Roses
First Official Review of Chinese Democracy
Rolling Stone has given Guns n' Roses Chinese Democracy 4 stars!
Rock critic David Fricke said: "Let's get right to it: The first Guns n' Roses album of new, original songs since the first Bush administration is a great, audacious, unhinged and uncompromising hard-rock record. In other words, it sounds a lot like the Guns n' Roses you know.
"At times, it's the clenched-fist five that made 1987's perfect storm, Appetite for Destruction; more often, it's the one sprawled across the maxed-out CDs of 1991's Use Your Illusion I and II, but here compressed into a convulsive single disc of supershred guitars, orchestral fanfares, hip-hop electronics, metallic tabernacle choirs and Axl Rose's still-virile, rusted-siren singing." more

First up, it's clear the new track sounds nothing like Appetite-era GNR. The song begins slowly with an ominous rumble but when the explosive double shot of Axl's wailing vocal and stop-start riff hits you're on a runaway train that doesn't stop.
On the downside, there isn't a memorable chorus and the song sounds like it's been put through an industrial processor (think Nine Inch Nails). And despite a few listens we still don't know what Axl's singing about (something about an "iron fist"?).
Overall though, the song has the muscle to move a small army. The riff is hot, the guitar solos zing and Axl's voice has the primal intensity that's made him one of the best rock vocalists of all time.
The verdict? Guns n Roses are back and they've got our attention. Now for the new album - bring on Saturday November 22!
Speaking about the release, GNR co-managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould stated: "The release of Chinese Democracy marks a historic moment in rock 'n' roll and we're launching with a monumental campaign that matches the ground-breaking sound of the album itself. Guns n' Roses fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning."
