Pearl Jam Rock Perth Post by: Eddie Ruckus - Rockin' Blogger 16 November, 2009 - 5:49 AM

Pearl Jam made a scorching start to their Australian tour in Perth on Saturday night, presenting an almighty 2½-hour set to some 30,000 ecstatic fans.

“I have a public service announcement to make,” a jovial Eddie Vedder announced early in the show. “There will be some lip-synching tonight. Not so I can dance or change outfits. It’s so I can drink and smoke. I just thought I should declare that because of the new rules.”

Clutching a wine bottle throughout much of the show – and happy to share it with some fans in the front rows – Vedder also announced: “I believe a toast is in order. We are very happy to be in Perth tonight. This is the start of our fifth Australian tour. We’ve always played here last, but this time we’re not saving the best for last, we’re starting here.”

The mood of the night started peaking early when Vedder joined support act Ben Harper on stage for a cover version of Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure”. Towards the end of the night, Vedder invited the other support act, Liam Finn, back on stage for another cover, performing Hunters & Collectors’ “Throw Your Arms Around Me”.

But mostly, it was wall-to-wall classic Pearl Jam, with the band visiting every one of their albums throughout the show.

The band continued playing even when the stadium lights had come up, ending the gig with “Yellow Ledbetter”, leaving fans breathless and living up to the hype that this might just be the best Pearl Jam tour ever.

Pearl Jam play Adelaide Oval tomorrow night.

I thought Pearl Jam's performance was slick as and Mike McCready was in particularly fine form.

I loved the 12-year-old kid right up the front of the stage! I am incredibly jealous of him.

I can ony hope they come again because we missed out on standing tickets this time. An awesome night and a low percentage of idiots.

    Pearl Jam rock.

After missing all other tours (due to deaths, births and some other stuff), I was determined not to miss this.

Getting in early and watching Liam Finn, Ben Harper got me so pumped for the real show.

From the first note Eddie and the boys just tore it up. The sound was awesome and the guitars and vocals were so spot on. Even when Ed wanted to restart a song they never missed a beat..

I left feeling so proud that the band that I have loved for almost 20 years could still pump out a massive show and were better than I expected. It was like watching old mates really do well and they more than lived up to my expectations.

After 2 plus awesome hours I am sure there is no better band in the world, (in my eyes). Give me real bands any day over that circus crap we had the weekend before.

As they say, Talent talks and bulls**t walks.

Rock on boys, seeya next time

I was lucky enough to be right up the front in front of Mike and it was awesome, amazing and the best concert I have ever been to.

I just wish I had tickets to the other Aussie venues :) Rod, Liam Finn came on at 5.30, Ben Harper 6.30 and Pearl Jam 8.00.

If you're going I recomend getting there early. We were there at 4.30 when the gates opened then went and brought merchandise and still got second row from front :)
