Bon Jovi Doesn’t Like Girls Post by: Music 6 April, 2009 - 7:38 AM

An all-girl Bon Jovi cover band in Los Angeles calling themselves Blonde Jovi have been forced to change their name after receiving a couple of rather menacing letters from the real Bon Jovi’s legal department.

“Due to threatened legal action by Jon Bon Jovi’s attorneys, we will no longer be using the name Blonde Jovi,” the girls announced on their MySpace page over the weekend.

“We are temporarily calling ourselves Blonde Jersey, until we come up with a new name. Too bad we didn’t go with our original name idea of Boob Jovi!” Too bad indeed – that’s an excellent name!

Unfortunately, the girls have also been banned from using the word “Jovi” [they are allowed to keep the word “Blonde”] and have also been told to stop using the Jovi “heart and dagger” logo because, the lawyers reckon, it “creates a likelihood of confusion” between the two bands. Yes, confusion between Bon Jovi and a little all-girl band playing divvy bars around LA.

The lawyers also sent a second letter saying they want to audit the former Blonde Jovi’s accounts, just in case they’re hiding a few million. Which doesn’t explain why band members are still holding down day-jobs as guitar teachers and session musos. As in, the members of Blonde Jovi, we mean – not the members of that other Jovi. Sorry if we’ve added to the confusion.

What are your thoughts about all this? Are Bon Jovi slightly over-reacting?

    A little over-reaction is a momentual understatement.

They're girls doing covers of a guy that wants to look like a girl or did now he's just getting old.

Jon supports tribute bands. I've seen him sing on stage with them. So I have to assume there is a reason they are going after this band.

This band was using the name, the logo and the banner, all of which make people think Bon Jovi. It seems reasonable for Bon Jovi to want to protect it's trademark.

Also, the letters I read from Bon Jovi's legal team where not "menacing" or "threatening." They simply said that this band had to stop comercially using property that isn't theirs to use.

Maybe Jon Bon Jovi is jealous because the girls have longer, more lucious hair than he does these days!

Bon Jovi (the band AND the man) has worked for 25 years to build a reputation and a consistent product. They have a right to protect their product.

As was said, there is nothing threatening or menacing. There are plenty of Bon Jovi tribute bands out there that are successful without using trademarked Bon Jovi images.

I think they are over-reacting. They should view this as cheap advertising and a compliment.

If they were that worried maybe they could have taken over the management of the girl group and helped them get bigger and better gigs and taken a percentage of their earnings.

I believe Jon has every right to stamp out copycats trying to ride his coat tails... he's been in the business far too long to be taken for a ride.

Jon has every right to protect a product and brand that has been built out of hard work over a period of 25 years.
