INXS Covers INXS Post by: Eddie Ruckus - Rockin' Blogger 28 July, 2009 - 7:40 AM

Rob Thomas spent last night in a studio in Sydney with members of INXS, re-recording a new version of the band’s classic “Never Tear Us Apart”.

The Daily Telegraph in Sydney has reported that the “surviving” members of INXS are recording a covers album of their own greatest hits, using different vocalists for each song.

Thomas, currently on a brief promo visit to Australia to announce his upcoming concert tour here, has made no secret of his admiration of INXS. In fact, he has admitted the song “Meltdown” from his latest solo album, Candlesong, is a “complete rip-off” of “Need You Tonight”.

“When I got on the phone from New York to talk to them about their record, I told them right up front: 'I want to say that I hope you guys don’t mind I completely tried to rip you off',” Thomas said.

During Matchbox Twenty’s last Australian tour, INXS drummer Jon Farriss joined the band on stage during the final show of the tour and bashed out versions of “Never Tear Us Apart” and “Don’t Change”.

Thomas has previously stated his admiration for Michael Hutchence. “He’s one of the greatest frontmen of any rock band, of any band,” Thomas said.

No more details about the INXS album are known at this stage, but some of us won’t be holding our breath.

What do you think? Does the world need an INXS cover record by INXS? [Please watch the Michael Hutchence clip at the top of the story before answering.]

Wow! That's great news to hear the boys are back in the studio, but still not sold on the whole concept.

Michael Hutchence was the heart n' soul of INXS and he will never be replaced!

I love the music of INXS and it'll be interesting to hear the "covers" of the songs. Always good to hear a different take on classic songs.

    I think it's a great idea!

So many INXS songs are timeless and deserve another listen by a new audience...

Having guest singers will introduce INXS to generation Y and still lets us older fans enjoy 'new' stuff.

These guys are the biggest money grubbers ever- long past their use-by date, it's all about the dollars.

INXS lost all credibility with their reality television hunt for a lead singer. I mean really, it's like Ringo and Paul going on telly to find the new John and George. Grotesque.

You were good in your day with Hutchence at the helm but just fade away already will you INXS?

Incidentally, Rob Thomas will soil a classic track no end by stamping his 'brand of bland' all over it. Awful.

Yahoo a whole new Generation gets to listen to this great band again but I think what they should do is a doulble album/CD and have the "Cover" songs and then have the originals as well.

I think it's an interesting idea, and while no one could compare to michael hutchence, I also think rob thomas is extremely talented and far from 'bland'.
