Sydney Big Day Out Melts Post by: Eddie Ruckus 23 January, 2010 - 10:04 AM
It was hot, so bloody hot. Close to 42-degrees in the middle of the day. But that didn’t ruin it, just made it even more intense than usual.
The Big Day Out rolled into Sydney yesterday for the 99th show since Nirvana played the very first BDO here in Sydney in 1992.
Punters were being treated for heat-exhaustion all around the place yesterday and several artists, especially the Pommy contingent, were freaking out a bit backstage about how they were gonna deal with the heat.
Lily Allen’s solution was to wear next to nothing, flashing her arse all around the shop again under a short and colourful kaftan. You know, no offence, Lily, but not quite the booty one usually pays to see.
The surprise big hit of this year’s tour has been rapper Dizzee Rascal, the crowd in the main arena going off, like they did for The Prodigy in the old days.
Of course, the local acts didn’t disappoint. Out on one of the side-stages, Grinspoon announced their arrival to the strains of Welcome To The Jungle. In the main arena, Powderfinger pumped the crowd ahead of the headliners, Muse. [BTW, does Bernard Fanning have some beef with Muse? He kept making snide little remarks about the trio throughout the set.]
Muse brought the long, hot day to frenzied end with a brilliant set, highlighted by a surprise guest appearance by Nic Cester [whose Jet had played on the Green stage earlier in the day] for a screeching cover of Acca Dacca’s “Back In Black”.,
If yesterday’s BDO was hot, today’s is gonna be even bloody hotter. It’s the 100th Big Day Out in Sydney today and temperatures at the venue had already hit 32-degrees by 7.30am this morning! They’re expected to get close to 45-degrees …
Were you at yesterday’s event? What was your highlight?

Highlights for me were Dizzee Rascal, Magic Dirt, Devendra Banhart and a little known band called Wagons.
Muse and Powderfinger had their moments as well.

Kasabian were by far the best. Muse were good, but no way near as good as they are made out to be. Rise Against were great as well, Powderfinger certainly one of the best musically.
