U2 To Split? Post by: Eddie Ruckus - Rockin' Blogger 4 June, 2009 - 7:12 AM

Has the time come for U2 to break up?

An article published in London’s respected Guardian newspaper and reprinted today in several Australian newspapers suggest the group have now out-stayed their welcome and should consider packing up their instruments before damaging their legacy any further.

The article points to the complete failure of U2’s latest single, “Magnificent”, to make an impact on the charts anywhere in the world, except at home in Ireland where it managed to enter the Top 10.

The single sold only 4000 copies across the UK in its first week of release, making it the worst selling U2 single since 1982, despite many believing it to be the best song on U2’s most recent album, No Line On The Horizon.

Of course, that album topped the charts around the world when it was released in March, but also just as quickly disappeared from charts once the initial wave of hype subsided.

The Guardian article argues that U2’s music now stands for nothing and the band should consider breaking-up and begin planning for a reunion tour for around 2019.

What do you think? Should U2 split? Has their music become meaningless? Are you still listening to No Line On The Horizon?

U2 seem to have definitely passed their Prime.

Their new stuff is OK but there are so many bands putting out much better music now.

It is a shame that their legendary early music is now tainted by the "fade out".

I think they would be better to call it quits now and maybe only reform for special gigs, like Midnight Oil did for Sound Relief this year.

The most recent U2 album got about 3 or 4 plays before I put it back in its cover, and have had no urge to listen to it again. Ordinary album. Sadly....

They were great, have put on some awesome concerts here in Melb, which I will always remember, but they would struggle to get me paying hard earned money to see them again.

Thanks for all the great songs over the years, but... time to hang up the mic and guitars lads.

You have your billions from us fans, live happily!!

One bad album does NOT constitute being over.

I've been a U2 fan since I was a young tike (a few deades ago now). This album is one of their best imo. Cannot understand why they chose Magnificent as the single- worst song on an albm that has so many killer tracks.

I'm glad they don't let the truth get in the way of a good story! Yes Larry and Co. should definitely do what the journalist says. U2 has never had to deal with negative press, it will be devastating to read for the band. Quick where can I buy a copy of Magnificent?

I can't stand Bono and his rants on extreme poverty and to make the world a better place. They haven't done anything good since October! But I bought a copy of this new album... love each and every track start to finish. It's on heavy rotation in my compact disc player. Unknown Caller, Stand Up Comedy and Breathe are amazing.

Is the Guardian the equivalent to The Onion? Or is the editor in a band that is trying to make it, but can't, so they throw the bristle when they see a successful band continue their success. Hater.
