VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Powderfinger Talk About The Break-Up And Why They Won't Reform Post by: Dave-O 2 November, 2011 - 10:12 AM
Brisbane's favourite sons - John Collins (bass) and Ian Haug (guitar) from Powderfinger - dropped into Triple M to talk about their new autobiography, Footprints: The Story Of Australia's Best Loved Band.
The book has everything from their childhood to the breakup. And Triple M Brisbane's The Grill Team wasted no time in getting to the nitty gritty asking Ian whether it was true that he didn't want to breakup the band?
"Yeah, I didn't want anyone to make a stupid decision. But I came around to it. There was no point continuing if we weren't enjoying it. It was good to finish on a high. But now we've said we're stopping we can't [come back]," he said.
The band wouldn't reveal who wanted to split, but singer Bernard Fanning's doing his solo thing definitely put a strain on the band.
"I was so jealous of him," Ian laughed before admitting Bernard's success with his solo album, Tea And Sympathy, was a testy period for the band.
John agreed: "[It] was a hard period for the band in terms of focus and I think that came out in the book.
"I think the success of it… I mean we were all really proud of Bernard for the success but in terms of writing it became more successful than we ever anticipated so he was busy doing his tours. That was a period of about four months where it was difficult."
What about a comeback? No way, said the band. Powderfinger's Sunsets Farewell Tour was it.
"My theory was if we said that 'we're calling it quits' then we should really call it quits," said Ian.
John agreed: "If people are paying to see the last ever gig then I think it's a lie if we come back."
The Powderfinger book, Footprints: The Story Of Australia's Best Loved Band is out November 8. It's also available as a limited collector's edition book and 2CD set.
Would you love to see Powderfinger reform or did they call it quits at the right time?
