Historic Melbourne Pub Demolished WITHOUT PERMISSION
The government are furious.
An iconic Carlton pub has been demolished on the weekend without a permit or council permission.
The Corkman Irish Pub was built 159 years ago and stood at the corner of Leicester and Pelham streets until it was knocked down on the weekend.
The Age report that residents on Saturday night rang Melbourne City Council to complain about demolition noise from the pub.
The building had been largely demolished, by the time council inspectors arrived.
A stop-work order was issued to prevent further demolition but a crew returned on Sunday to finish off the job.
"This is a very, very serious matter – that building was protected by a heritage overlay," said Lord Mayor Robert Doyle told the Age.
