Eddie Strikes Back Post by: Strak 19 February, 2010 - 12:54 PM

Eddie McGuire has been making news all over the world for a few quips that he and Mick Molloy made during their coverage of the figure skating in Vancouver. In particular, comments relating to champion skater Johnny Weir (above).
The comment that stirred up a hornet's nest was when Mick Molloy said, "They don't leave anything in the locker room those blokes."
Eddie retorted, "They don't leave anything in the closet either, do they?"
He certainly let everyone know on the Hot Breakfast that nothing sinister was meant and that he is not homophobic.
Listen to Ed's side of the story:
Listen to whole of Eddie's rave in today's Hot Breakfast podcast.
We've found a clip of Johnny Weir doing a TV piece for ESPN (see below).
In the video, there's mention of making someone 'pee a little bit', but no mention of Eddie McGuire.
Have we all become too sensitive?

Talk about a mountain out of an ant hill. The guy was really camping it up on the ice and Mick and Eddie were pretty much just calling it as they saw it.

It doesn't matter whether he meant anything by it. He said what he said and some people will take it to heart. Sometimes you really have to think before you say something, people will take from it what they will.

"Have we all become too sensitive?" More like Eddie hasn't become sensitive *enough*. You think whatever you want to think but keep that type of stupidity out of the Olympics. Kthxbye!

I'm sorry to say, but you guys really missed the mark. If you think that that potentially homophobic slur was the only reason why we are so annoyed, you are wrong. That is merely what the press has grabbed onto. The facebook page is much more than that.
Eddie McGuire has shown over and over that he has no interest in the winter olympics. He is presenting the coverage in a fashion that is offensive, imbecilic, condescending and down right embarrassing.
I love the winter olympics, but right now he makes me embarrassed to be an Australian.

Eddie, nothing can excuse what you said and implied during your "commentary". This isn't the 80's anymore bud, why don't you drag yourself into the 21st century.

Sorry mate, pretty lame defense. Your comments (all of them!) were offense, uncalled for, and more than anything else totally unprofessional in the context of calling a premier sporting event such as the Olympics. I'm fortunate enough to be watching the games overseas and don't have to worry about being embarrassed by loose cannon commentators like yourself mate.
Thanks,
Greg -

This is not a case of mountains out of molehills - the cultural insensitivity that makes one cringe at the Footy Show has been all over the Nine Network's stuttering coverage of the Olympics.

Perhaps we need a much stronger understanding within our community of what marginalisation is. One thing it is is making 'othering' humour of someone simply because they are different. If it can be understood that 'othering' because of difference is the basis of racism, why is it so hard for the Nine Network folks to see that it is the basis for a whole range of inappropriate behaviours, such as sexism, homophobia, etc -

If it acts like a duck, walks like one and looks like one, especially dressed up and made up like one, what else would one say.
