The Hot Breakfast

Hoons Wreck First Day Of Tennis Post by: Triple M 19 January, 2010 - 9:11 AM

A photographer from The Herald Sun told the Hot Breakfast of his run in with a group of teenagers on the first day of the Australian Open. Craig said that he was hit on the back of the head and spat on when he took photos of the disruptive group who were later kicked out of the Rod Laver Arena.

Wearing Croation colours, making Nazi salutes and chanting, the group of about 12 to 15 set off flares and caused a disturbance before the first ball had even been hit. Security were quick to act after last years fracas between Bosnian and Serbian fans escalated into a scuffle in front of families.

Callers to the show gave their opinions on these young guys behaviour.

This is not acceptable behaviour for any sport fans. The Open is one of few events that puts Melbourne on the world map and this isn't a great example of multi culturalism for the rest of the world to see.

How do we stop this behaviour? How should we punish those responsible?

Shocking, I am embarassed for all of the Croatian tennis fans who love being a part of the community including going to international events like the tennis.

These kids have a lot to answer, but what i am worried about is where they got these ideals from in the first place. Maybe we should be pointing the finger at their parents for instilling these themes in their heads.
