Pete and Richard go for a series of health tests

When Triple M bosses said we're having a blokes day out, everyone said, 'Bloody fantastic!'. There were cries of, 'What are we doing'?Was it a pub for lunch, ten pin bowling or footy at the G. The reply didn't bring the expected hollers and hooting from the male staff. It was revealed that we were off to the Alfred Hospital for a big group men's health check.

We probably don't need to tell you that blokes aged 30-50 are absolute shockers for looking after themselves. We work hard, play hard and then hardly ever go to the doctor to get a 40k service and overhaul, but we should. This visit was also a good way to help spread the word about the Alfred Hospital, which has an amazing canteen, with some of the best sandwiches and coffee ever consumed. Seriously, it was a good way to see that a men's health check is pretty easy to undertake and can be all over in 15 minutes. A serious and intensive check might be more full on and a wee bit squirmish and are available from your local GP.

When the news came out that Sam Newman was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, the call for prostate checks in Melbourne went up immensely. The reality is that other diseases are more likely to take your life.

  • Trauma is the leading cause of death amongst people aged under 40, accounting for 75% of adolescent deaths and 40% in 15 -25 year olds.
  • Men aged between 16-24 years make up the biggest group affected by major trauma, followed by those aged 25 to 40.
  • Death during 25-64 year olds for males is more common than in females
  • At age 25, male deaths are 3 times more common as female deaths
  • It is important to note that whilst prostate cancer is a serious health issue there are larger scale health issues for males in the 25-64yo age group
  • Some of the men's health issues that were covered in the session include -
  • Prostate and testicular cancer and sexual dysfunction, Colo-rectal cancer and cardio vascular disease
  • Some simple health checks that offered in a Men's Health Check are a BP test (that's blood pressure for all you non-medicos), Diabetes risk screening, Blood sugar levels and urinalysis.

Check out the pics of Pete and Rich getting their 'Report Card' on their health and some silly hi-jinx with the medical equipment and after today we'll never think of our colon the same way ever again.

A big thanks to all the crew at the Alfred including Angela, the Nurses, Dr Marco Bonollo, Head Disease Management Unit, Bayside Health, Dr Will Kemp Consultant Gastroentorologist and Mr Uri Hanegbi Consultant Urologist.

So blokes, do it for your own health, do it for your kids, do it for your Mrs or just do it for your footy club. Go and get a Men's health check. No - not next week, do it this week!
