The Hawks goal kicking machine Buddy Franklin was a big fan of Triple M's Garry Lyon back in the day. Buddy idolised the Melbourne champion and even sent him a fan letter, everyday after school he would check the letter box, but nothing ever arrived. Finally, eighteen years later and through the magic of radio Garry has replied to Buddy's letter. It went something like this.

Dear Buddy,

My what a big boy you've become. I'm sorry I have been a little bit slow in writing back to you, but I've been a little bit busy. 18 years is not all that long though, let's be honest.

I've included a signed Demons jumper with a number 3 on the back. Try it on and if it fits okay, and I personally think the colours suit you, then drop me a line back and we'll see if we can do something about getting you out of that horrid brown and yellow thing they make you wear.

Good luck with the rest of your career. If you could write back and send me an autograph and maybe some stickers, that would be great.

Your mate Garry.

P.S Don't make me wait 18 years. That would be just plain rude.

and now for Buddy's reply ...

Dear Garry,

Thank you for your letter. I am writing this letter 18 minutes after hearing you on the radio. I have been checking the letter box every day for the past 18 years - waiting for your reply and it is good to know that now I can finally stop my daily routine.

You were my hero growing up. I used to look up to you, wear your number on my back. But 18 years is a long time you know.

I loved the Dees when I was young - and who knows - if you had written back maybe I would have pulled on your famous number 3 one day? But now I have my own number - 23 - with its own history, which has been worn by many great Hawks throughout the years. And now I really love playing in the brown and gold - so thanks for your letter - even if it is 18 years too late!!!

It was great to meet you in person the other week – but you’re a lot smaller than I remember.

All the best

Buddy
