Barrett: Fevola's Career Is Over Post by: The Learned One 8 September, 2010 - 3:28 PM

Triple M’s news-breaker extraordinaire Damian Barrett believes Brendan Fevola has played his last match of AFL after he was indefinitely suspended by the Brisbane Lions on Tuesday.

The Lions took the action against Fevola after he allegedly indecently exposed himself in front of a woman at a non-club function on the weekend.

The AFL is investigating the incident and Fevola will remain suspended until the investigation is complete.

In a media release, Lions CEO Michael Bowers said: “We feel that the allegation is a very serious one and we think if the behaviour is as described, then it's unacceptable behaviour for anyone in football.”

And Barrett told Triple M’s Rush Hour on Wednesday that this rhetoric pointed to the two-time Coleman Medalist being sacked by the Lions just one year into his three-year contract.

“It’s not the (usual) response you get from a club official as a rule when they’re out there publicly talking about an infringement by their player,” Barrett said.

“Normally you’re given the line (that) there’s two sides to every story and (you’re) innocent until proven guilty so I think join the dots on this one and that’s it.”

Barrett said the Brisbane-Fevola marriage was doomed from the moment the Lions secured the former Carlton spearhead during last year’s trade period after a string of off-field incidents saw him booted out of Visy Park.

“It goes back to (coach) Michael Voss and (then football manager) Graeme Allan running off on their own accord last year and going to get Brendan Fevola without any consultation of any nature with anyone in officialdom,” Barrett said.

“It annoyed the board members at the time.”

But given that Fevola was on track to earn in the vicinity of $1 million in 2011 alone, the Brisbane board could very well use this latest misdemeanour as an excuse to sack him.

Eddie McGuire told The Hot breakfast on Thursday that said he had put in a call to Fev on Wednesday night.

"He assures me that he will be arguing the case vigorously. He believes that he does not have a case to answer in this issue," Eddie said.

What a set up! Brisbane Lions have salary cap issues and a 'highly paid star' who hasn't been performing on field...what to do??? I know, create a situation that places doubt in people's minds so they have no choice but to sack him. Oh, what a shame...and it makes room in their salary cap and they get rid of the non-performer so they can keep their real stars...I am a Saints fan but...truth is truth. Wake up!!!

Ben Cousins got heaps of help where as people just treat Fev like a dickhead and right him off all the time. Maybe he has mental problems that he cant help. Cousins problems were of his own doing. I think fev could use a bit of professional help and not the treatment he gets...it is obvious that the man needs help. The AFL and Brisbane cant just sack him and be done with it. What message does that send. If you have drug problems we will help you but if your not right in the head, we will just throw you away? Maybe he is just a screw up, but at least find out before you destroy his career. Everyone deserves at least that much...
