Former Western Bulldogs star Luke Darcy has told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast that he doesn’t believe Melbourne young gun Tom Scully should accept a multi-million-dollar deal from the GWS Giants.
According to the Herald Sun, the Giants have offered Scully $5 million over five years to leave the Demons and join them.
But Darcy believes it would be in Scully’s best interests to stay with Melbourne which has reportedly made him a counter-offer worth $3 million over five years.
Hear The Hot Breakfast discuss Scully’s interesting predicament (5m 09s):
“I might be old-fashioned but I think in the long run you get it (money) back because this town is such a massive town that revolves so much around football,” Darcy told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast.
“Imagine if that man decides to stay for half-price, imagine if he becomes the next (Melbourne) captain, if he delivers their next premiership, if he becomes a one-club player.”
“I reckon over the journey he gets all that (money) back and more in what he’s done and the loyalty factor and his life after football.”
Darcy suggested if Scully was patient, he would potentially end up with as much money by staying with the Demons as he would joining GWS now.
“I reckon in the long run you always get rewarded more, and it might take a little longer when you stay,” Darcy said.
“The long-term benefit of him living in Melbourne with an old-school club like the Melbourne Football Club, being their marquee man, I reckon the future is for him to stay.”
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire highlighted that 20-year-old Scully found himself in the unique situation of being in a position that most star footballers find themselves in in the latter parts of their careers.
“Usually you say to a player at the end of his career: Mate, cash in, get whatever you can and see if you can get something on the way out the door,” Eddie said.
“He (Scully) could establish himself, get $5 million upfront for the first five years, play for five years, come back as a free agent ... and the big money will be on the table.”
Should Scully leave Melbourne and join the GWS Giants?

Tom Scully is not worth that sort of coin. The Dees should stick fat as they have other midfielders that they need to consider. Trengove, Gysberts, McKenzie, Moloney are all just as important.

What a hard choice money offered that most people dream about earning in their lifetime let alone five years.Melbourne's the Mecca of AFL even in the off season you talk about the next season,in sydney its very different although the Swans have made their mark here NRL still takes up the majority of the sports pages in the local newspapers the NRL footy show is on before the AFL footy show leaving the latter till 11:30pm unless you can afford cableTV you only get three games a week friday night game at 11:30pm,living in sydney's inner west NRL bulldogs have a cult following wearing a bulldogs AFL cap hardly raises an eyebrow having the GWS might balance the codes out but how long will it take?having good players like tom will help GWS get established but the atmosphere of footy in melbourne the roar of the crowds at the games, family friends and team mates money can't buy
