Eddie McGuire has launched a staunch defence of AFL boss Andrew Demetriou, who has taken long-service leave to attend the London Olympics.

Herald Sun footy writer, Michael Warner, wrote an editorial that said in part: "Someone on the AFL commission should jump on the phone and summon Andrew Demetriou back to Melbourne - pronto."

"The boss is just one week into his six-week, mid-season European odyssey and already the wheels are falling off."

Warner used some on-field incidents from the weekend and controversy surrounding the video review system as reasons why Demetriou needs to be on duty in Australia rather than overseas.

However, McGuire said it is not only important for Demetriou the family man to have taken his trip but also for the AFL as it'll give the league boss the opportunity to mingle with the biggest sports and media players in the world.

"I have got a problem with journos trying to pick a scab and a fight for no reason .. Andrew Demetriou is taking long service leave having completed the collective bargaining agreement, the TV rights deal, the stadium deals - if ever the was a time to have off, it's now," said a fired up McGuire, who said the bulk of a footy administrator's work is done in the off-season.
