When Essendon and Hawthorn lock horns, no matter where the two teams are on the ladder, something fiery usually happens.

The modern-day rivalry was probably born out of some fiercely-contested clashes in the 80s (the teams squared off in the 1983, '84 and '85 Grand Finals).

In the 1985 Grand Final there was an enormous brawl, which happened again in 2004 in what many footy fans know as the 'line in the sand' game.

And in 2009 with a finals berth on the line, Brad Sewell's face was broken by Essendon's Matthew Lloyd coming off the square. The Bombers went on to win the game and kill the Hawks' premiership defence.

There have also been some great highlights over the years, none more exciting than Buddy Franklin's two goals in the same MCG game a couple of years ago.

Triple M Footy will be all over this game on Friday night from Etihad Stadium.

There is also office pride on the line, with Dangerous Dave (Hawthorn) and Higgo (Essendon) keen to have bragging rights for another year.
