EARLIER:

AFL player John McCarthy will be farewelled by mourners in two states on Thursday morning, after his death last week in Las Vegas.

A funeral mass attended by AFL identities including the players from Port Adelaide and Collingwood, the two clubs McCarthy represented, will be held in the Victorian town of Sorrento.

A memorial service will also be held at the Power's training ground, Alberton Oval, where those in attendance will then be able to watch the funeral.

The service in Sorrento begins at 11:30am while people are welcome at Alberton Oval from 10:30am.

Dane Swan, a former team-mate of McCarthy's at Collingwood, told Triple M earlier this week it was a 'no brainer' for the Magpie players to attend John McCarthy's funeral on Thursday in Sorrento, a night before the preliminary final clash against Sydney on Friday night.

"We'll get to Sydney Thursday night but before that I think it's pretty important for the boys who feel pretty close to him and everyone else who he met go down there and wish him goodbye one last time," Swan said.

Triple M will only publish images and videos that have been approved by the McCarthy family. We wish his family and friends all the best on this very tough day.
